2nd Session Paper Presentation

Fourth TANAP Conference in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Sri Margana's paper on Social Disturbances in the Java's Oosthoek was commented on by Mrs. A.M. Djouliati Souroyo. She remarked that the study of peasant movements (Sartono) may be more integrated in the approach, as Probolingo was a frontier region. Prof. Nguyen Quang Ngoc suggested to also having a closer look at Chinese sources. Prof. Nira Wickramasinghe said that the study of rebellion in colonial society demands a more critical approach of the Dutch sources. The purpose is not so much to look at the roots of rebellion, but looking at the reasons for rebellen. Reasons and roots are different.
Similar suggestions were made concerning the paper on Tax Farming on the Java's Northeast Coast by Kwee Hui Kian. Dr. Suhartono asked more information about corruption and bribery among the Chinese sayahbandar (harbourmasters). What was the relation between the local bupati and the syahbandar?
