INTRODUCTION

The archival cluster of TANAP includes two
elements:

  • maintaining and protecting the information in the VOC archives;
  • improving accessibility and thereby the use of the VOC archives.

Activities involving physical preservation are carried out within the framework of this primary purpose and are aimed at conservation of the information in the archives.

The projects within the archival
framework are based on the results of a fact-finding mission to the repositories in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa and the Netherlands. By VOC archives, one in principle means only documents drafted or received by one of the units of the VOC organization. This boundary is sometimes vague, because many diverse archives became mixed over the centuries.
