Wizard free search

The use of Free search is very easy. For those who are not familiar with internet, we give a step by step guidance:

  1. You can type any expression (any word, any string of characters). You can also use numbers to find documents in a specific year.
  2. You can search on more than one expression. Separate the expressions (words, names, etc.) with a space. More expressions will result in less results. The computer will search for descriptions of documents that contain all expressions. So the computer will search for expression xxx AND expression yyy AND expression zzz, etc. Descriptions that only contain one of the expressions, will be skipped.
  3. To avoid a crash of your computer due to too many results, you have to fill in at least four characters. So it is not possible to search on small words like "bos". Of course, it is possible to search for text like "het bos" or "een bos".
  4. Note, that in the 17th and 18th century many names were written in various ways. In absence of a Dutch standard spelling, often people did not discriminate between C and K, or C and S, or S and Z, or D and T, U and V, V and F, I and J, EI, Y and IJ, etc. In addition some people used "aa", whereas others used "ae"; e.g. "paard" and "paerd".
  5. Moreover, frequently names were written the way the name sounded according to the person who wrote the name down. Besides, in the course of time many of these places got different names. When looking for a name, be creative !
  6. Please, use various ways of spelling. You are advised to search on part of an expression, especially on a string of characters that does not appear often.

Example: when you search for descriptions of documents mentioning slavery, you have to search on "slaaf", "slaav", "slaef", "slaev", "slav" and "slaf". Note that in the seventeenth and eighteenth century people often used other expressions for slaves like "lijfeigene" (body owned, in English: serf or bondman). So you also have to search on expressions like "lijfei", "lijvei", "lijfey", "leifei", "leijfei", "leijfey", "leyfey", "leyfei", "leyfeij", "lyfeij", and so on.

Note: you will only find those documents where the expression is explicitly mentioned in the description of the document. So all other documents containing information about e.g. slavery, like resolutions, diaries, reports, etc., will not be in your search results !

You can refine your results with the option "search within results".

Use the button  Add to my work folder at the top of your search results if you want to save them in your personal work folder.
